AI Illusions versus Real Matchstick Craft
Published Mar 16, 2026
Editor’s note: This feature originally presented imagery shared by John Ret as physical matchstick sculpture. It has been updated after concerns were raised that the work seems to be AI-generated rather than handmade.
The images published below, shared under the name John Ret, quickly drew attention for their dramatic depictions of animals and objects seemingly built from thousands of matches, then burned in carefully staged sequences. While visually impressive, there is no clear evidence that these sculptures exist as physical objects, and multiple details suggest the imagery is digitally generated.
That distinction matters, especially in a medium where real artists spend months building fragile structures by hand. Long before AI-generated images began circulating online, artists such as Pei-San Ng and Patrick Acton were already pushing matchstick sculpture into remarkable territory through patience, precision and material understanding.
Pei-San’s delicate constructions were featured here on Inspiration Grid in our early years, while Patrick’s large-scale architectural pieces remain some of the most ambitious examples of the form. Both showcase what real matchstick craftsmanship looks like when the process is as impressive as the final image.
